Dear UCSF Community,

We are continuing to monitor the evolving Ebola outbreak affecting parts of Central and East Africa, including the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Uganda, and South Sudan. The outbreak is continuing in the DRC, but Uganda has reported success in ending ongoing transmission of the virus and has not observed any recent cases. Due to this progress, we are revising our current campus travel advisory to this region. 

Update: Due to the ongoing Ebola outbreak, travel to the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan is prohibited until further notice. Travel to surrounding countries, including Rwanda and Uganda, can proceed with proper precautions. If your work in Uganda involves clinical care, please follow all recommended infection prevention and control practices. Travel should be registered with UC Away for monitoring purposes and to ensure access to travel insurance. Protocols to return to the United States and return to UCSF’s campus (enhanced screening 21 days following return) should be closely followed to avoid safety risks, delays, and noncompliance.

The risk to the general public in the United States remains low. However, U.S. public health authorities have maintained enhanced travel restrictions and screening measures related to travel from impacted countries. We will continue to take proactive steps to protect safety and support continuity of operations.

Members of our community who are planning travel to affected regions should:

• Monitor CDC and WHO travel advisories closely.
• Register travel with UCSF via UC Away.
• Contact the Occupational Health Services – Communicable Disease Response Team at [email protected] for post-travel recommendations.

Reminder: All UCSF travelers are required to register planned travel with UC Away. Employees and learners who make travel arrangements via the UC Travel Program (known as Connexxus or ConnexUC) will have their itinerary automatically registered for UC Away and UC’s International Travel Insurance. If travel is arranged externally, employees must register their travel directly with UC Away.
