Update on Federal Immigration Enforcement
Chancellor Sam Hawgood shares information on how UCSF will respond to potential immigration enforcement activities at UCSF and UCSF Health.
Dear UCSF Community,
I want to share some important information about how UCSF will respond to potential immigration enforcement activities at UCSF and UCSF Health. Providing you this information is part of our responsibility under state laws — SB 98 (2025) and the continuing provisions of AB 21 (2017) — but I also want you to know that I recognize how concerning this issue is for many in our community.
Our shared mission is to advance health worldwide, supported by our PRIDE Values and Principles of Community. These values and principles guide our work and shape how we respond in moments of uncertainty, ensuring our ability to protect the safety and dignity of everyone in our community while upholding the law. With support from the UC Office of the President, we are monitoring this issue closely, and I want you to know that UCSF is here to support you.
Stay Connected: Our Commitment to Transparency and Communication
If we confirm the presence of non-UCSF law enforcement activity related to immigration at UCSF or UCSF Health sites, we will inform you promptly via email.
Guidance for UCSF Health
For our UCSF Health colleagues: If non-UCSF law enforcement activity is confirmed at our clinical facilities, I ask you to remain focused on what you do best — providing safe, continuous, and compassionate care for our patients without interruption under any circumstance. UCSF Health staff who encounter federal law enforcement officials should contact their leadership and follow established procedures. Our operational leaders, including the Administrator on Call, will coordinate with our legal, security, and communications teams as needed.
Guidance for All Other UCSF Community Members
For our broader UCSF community beyond UCSF Health: Please review and bookmark the following resource, which outlines the steps you should take if we confirm that non-UCSF law enforcement officials are conducting immigration-related activities at UCSF sites beyond our clinical facilities. UCSF leadership and appropriate teams are prepared to respond, guided by our community values and principles.
