UCSF’s NIH Funding in 2025: Fueling Discovery and Impact
UCSF faculty secured strong National Institutes of Health support in 2025, reflecting the strength of the university’s research enterprise and advancing discoveries that improve health and drive innovation.
Dear UCSF Community,
I am pleased to share encouraging news that underscores the strength and impact of UCSF’s research enterprise.
In 2025, our faculty secured $824 million in funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), marking another strong year of federal support. This achievement reflects the excellent quality and rigor of the work taking place across our campus and clinical enterprise, as well as the collaborative spirit that defines UCSF.
Federal support for research is indispensable. These competitive awards empower UCSF scientists and clinicians to tackle some of the most devastating diseases facing humanity, from cancer to neurological disorders to infectious disease.
It fuels the discoveries that expand our understanding of human biology, drives innovations in patient care, and sustains the training of the next generation of scientists. It also strengthens the broader innovation ecosystem that helps drive the economy of the Bay Area and the nation.
This recognition comes during a period of rapid and extraordinary change in the research landscape, and I am grateful for the resilience, focus, and shared commitment to excellence that our community continues to demonstrate.
I invite you to read more about this milestone and the research it makes possible in the UCSF.edu web story.
Thank you for all you do to advance our mission.
Sincerely,
Sam Hawgood, MBBS
