UCSF is Expanding Clipper BayPass

UCSF is Expanding Clipper BayPass

UCSF is expanding the Clipper BayPass across our community beginning in 2027.

Dear UCSF Community,

I’m excited to announce that UCSF is expanding the Clipper BayPass across our community beginning in 2027. BayPass provides unlimited travel on 24 bus, rail, and ferry services across the nine-county Bay Area.

We know commuting is a significant part of the day for many of our employees. This expansion responds directly to your feedback requesting additional transit options that are convenient, reliable, sustainable, and affordable.

‌When the expanded BayPass pilot begins on Jan. 1, 2027, it will be available to all UCSF and UCSF Health employees who are eligible for core benefits. The pass will be available at no cost or for a small monthly co-pay, based on pay scale. We’ll share more information in the coming weeks about eligibility, monthly co-pays, and how to enroll.

The three-year agreement, approved Sept. 11 by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, also allows us to extend BayPass for UCSF students through June 2030. Students will continue to pay for the passes through the annual Student Transit Pass Fee per the referendum approved in 2023.

Expanding transit access

By making BayPass available to approximately 36,000 eligible employees and students at UCSF in 2027, we are expanding on the pilot program launched in 2024. UCSF was the first employer to join the BayPass pilot, and the response has been strong. About 8,300 employees and students participate today, and 77% of those eligible enrolled in the pilot this year. Together, participants have taken more than 2.75 million rides since UCSF joined the program.

As one of the Bay Area’s largest employers, UCSF’s participation also supports the public transportation system that connects our campuses, hospitals, and communities across the region.

I’m glad we can expand this benefit to more of our employees, and we’ll keep you updated as we get closer to enrollment. For any immediate questions, please email [email protected].
