UC Regents Approve New Hospital Building at UCSF BCH Oakland

Announcement is sent regarding University of California Board of Regents approval of UCSF’s plans for the new hospital building at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland.

Dear UCSF Community,

We are pleased to announce that the University of California Board of Regents has approved UCSF’s plans for the new hospital building at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland.

The seven-story hospital building, part of ongoing efforts to improve the children's hospital since 2015, will provide a state-of-the-art, pediatric medical facility for children and their families across the Bay Area. It will feature advanced medical technology, light-filled healing environments, and outdoor spaces for patients, families, and staff. It will also include a new and expanded emergency department, a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), seven new surgical suites, and triple the number of single-patient rooms. Additionally, it will offer a 20-bed inpatient behavioral health unit and spaces for families to stay with their children during care.

This new facility will enhance the capabilities of our dedicated care teams, providing them with the tools and environment needed to deliver the highest quality care, and further our ability to attract exceptional learners, faculty, and staff. With facilities that reflect the excellence of the care provided within, our teams can continue to innovate and lead in pediatric care, ensuring that every child, regardless of socioeconomic status, receives world-class treatment.

The new hospital is a vital part of our integrated system of pediatric care across the Bay Area.

It will allow us to expand our reach and impact, providing seamless, coordinated care for children and their families. As a critical safety net hospital, UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland serves a diverse population, with over 70% of our patients covered by Medi-Cal. This project underscores our commitment to health equity, ensuring all children in our community have access to cutting-edge, compassionate care.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the teams who have helped achieve this milestone, especially the care teams dedicated to our young patients. Your daily commitment to our mission of providing excellent, compassionate care and service is inspiring.
