Remembering John Clements

John Clements, MD, whose discovery of lung surfactant transformed newborn care, has died at 101. He served as a mentor to generations of scientists.

Dear UCSF Community:

On September 3, 2024, UCSF lost a revered member of our community, former faculty member John Clements, MD, who died at the age of 101.

Dr. Clements served as a mentor to generations of scientists and was one of a handful of people who laid the groundwork for the powerhouse research institution that UCSF has become. Known for his inquisitiveness and insight, Dr. Clements was recognized with the Lasker Clinical Medical Research Award in 1994 for his discovery of lung surfactant that has gone on to save millions of premature babies around the world.

Dr. Clements will be remembered as a respected, trusted, humble individual who never sought the limelight, yet had a huge impact. You can read more about John and his remarkable life at UCSF.edu.
