A New Chapter for Community Hospitals at Hyde and Stanyan
UCSF Health announced that it will begin the process of renaming UCSF Health Saint Francis Hospital to UCSF Health Hyde Hospital, and UCSF Health St. Mary’s Hospital to UCSF Health Stanyan Hospital. The new names reflect where these hospitals have served San Franciscans for more than a century — on Hyde and Stanyan Streets.
Dear UCSF Community,
Today marks a new chapter for our community hospitals in San Francisco.
Earlier today, we announced that we will begin the process of renaming UCSF Health Saint Francis Hospital to UCSF Health Hyde Hospital, and UCSF Health St. Mary’s Hospital to UCSF Health Stanyan Hospital. The new names reflect where these hospitals have served San Franciscans for more than a century — on Hyde and Stanyan Streets — and align with UCSF Health’s place-based naming conventions, from Parnassus Heights to Mission Bay to Oakland.
We’re building on a year of progress integrating these hospitals into UCSF Health — transitioning to Epic, expanding specialty and inpatient coverage, and upgrading facilities and technology. These improvements are already creating a more connected system; they help us transfer patients more seamlessly from Parnassus to the community hospitals, open up capacity for complex care, and enable patients to be seen faster.
Saint Francis and St. Mary’s have been part of San Francisco for more than a century, representing compassion, humility, service, and dedication. These names carry deep meaning for staff, physicians, and the community — and that legacy will always remain part of UCSF Health. To honor this history, we will create permanent recognition installations at both hospitals — developed in collaboration with staff, physicians, and community voices — that celebrate their rich histories and lasting contributions.
We’ve invested in these hospitals to strengthen care and access for patients across San Francisco. A name change alone doesn’t solve every challenge, but it’s a clear, visible signal that these hospitals are fully part of UCSF Health — and central to how we deliver connected, high-quality care across our system.
The change is part of our broader effort to invest in these long-standing institutions and more clearly connect them to UCSF Health’s system of coordinated care. We believe in these hospitals — in their history, their teams, and what they mean to the health of our community.
This work also strengthens the system that supports UCSF’s broader mission of care, research, and education. By building a more coordinated network across San Francisco, we’re improving access for patients, efficiency for care teams, and supporting infrastructure that allows all of UCSF to thrive.

Thank you for your continued partnership and for all that you do to advance UCSF’s mission and the health of our community.
Sincerely,
