Additional SCOTUS Decisions

U.S. Supreme Court rulings that have implications for UCSF, especially for members of the LGBTQIA+ community and people with federal loans.

Dear UCSF Community,

As you are aware, the U.S. Supreme Court announced additional rulings today with implications for UCSF, especially for members of the LGBTQIA+ community and people with federal loans. Like the Court’s decision on affirmative action yesterday and abortion last year, today’s rulings understandably have disappointed many within our community. UC President Michael Drake issued a statement reflecting on this week’s SCOTUS decisions that you can read here.

At UCSF, we will continue to pursue our mission oriented around serving the needs of all those who seek our care, education, and research. To advance health at home and beyond, we will continue to focus on equity, diversity, and inclusion in every community we serve. This shared value of prioritizing the interests of those who rely on us has kept UCSF vital, even as we recognize that not everyone in our community of more than 33,000 faculty, learners, and staff shares the same political and cultural views. It is, as you know, this rich diversity of backgrounds and perspectives that helps power our public mission.

As the country prepares to celebrate Independence Day, I hope you are able to enjoy some down time with family and friends. Let us support greater dialogue in the year ahead, in search of a more perfect union that celebrates difference and one other.

Sincerely,

Sam Hawgood, MBBS
