Catherine Waters Appointed Interim Dean, School of Nursing

Dr. Catherine Waters, a professor in the Department of Community Health Systems, has been named Interim Dean of the UCSF School of Nursing.

Dear UCSF Community,

I am pleased to announce that I have named Dr. Catherine Waters, a professor in the Department of Community Health Systems, as Interim Dean of the UCSF School of Nursing.

Dr. Waters will succeed Dean Catherine Gilliss, who announced in June that she will be stepping down in December 2023, while we conduct a national search for a new dean. I thank Dr. Gilliss for her exemplary leadership of the top-ranked school.

A member of the UCSF faculty since 1996, Dr. Waters’ research focuses on advancing health through lifestyle interventions in collaboration with public and private community partnerships. She has served on UCSF and UC-wide Academic Senate committees responsible for reviewing and recommending faculty advancement for all schools and campuses.

Dr. Waters was selected as the inaugural recipient of the Sally Bates Endowed Chair in Health Disparities for her lifelong commitment to championing diversity and working to reduce health disparities in marginalized populations through research, teaching, and service.

A former appointed member of the San Francisco Health Commission, Dr. Waters earned her BSN degree in Transcultural Nursing and PhD degree in Nursing Science from the University of Miami.

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Waters on this interim appointment.

Sincerely,

Sam Hawgood, MBBS
Chancellor
Arthur and Toni Rembe Rock Distinguished Professor
