Brian Smith to Retire as Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer
Brian Smith will retire as UCSF's Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer in August. His contributions created an environment of confidence and trust across the UCSF enterprise.
Dear UCSF Community,
I am writing to share that Brian Smith, JD, MBA, will retire on Aug. 1 after 11 years of dedicated service to UC San Francisco and UCSF Health.
Brian has served as UCSF’s chief ethics and compliance officer since 2019, after holding the role on an interim basis beginning in 2017. In this position, he has overseen a broad portfolio that spans research integrity, conflicts of interest, regulatory support, export control and research security, and the handling of whistleblower and retaliation concerns. He also has served as senior associate vice chancellor for research infrastructure and operations and as a member of my Cabinet.
Brian’s work has helped strengthen the systems that support UCSF’s research enterprise and ensure adherence to federal and state laws and UC policies. His responsibilities have included oversight of human and animal research protections, the Laboratory Animal Resource Center, research cores, and Environment, Health and Safety. He also serves as UCSF’s research integrity officer and as the institutional official for human subjects and laboratory animal research.
Brian often has emphasized the importance of building a culture of compliance through education and shared responsibility across the community. His leadership has helped advance that goal.
Please join me in thanking Brian for his years of service and wishing him well in retirement.
