Message on Racially-motivated Shooting in Buffalo

Dear UCSF Community,

The news of the mass shooting targeting a Black community in Buffalo, New York, this past weekend reminds us of the urgency behind the ongoing need to confront racism. My heart breaks for the victims, their families and friends, the entire Buffalo community, and all those who have been touched by this senseless violence.

An unremarkable Saturday at a grocery store turned tragic as 10 people were killed and three more were wounded by a white supremacist who had previously written about his racist views, then planned and carried out mass murder fueled by hate and amplified with gun violence.

This incident echoes too many prior tragedies in which innocent people were targeted for no more than the color of their skin, sexual orientation or identity, political views, or religion. If you would benefit from UCSF’s support services, please avail yourself of these resources for students, faculty, and staff:

Despite how challenging it can be in moments like these, it is important to reinforce our resolve in our own communities, including our UCSF community, to confront racism and bias in all of their forms. In the days ahead, let’s look out for one another and offer each other the support we need.
