Celebrating LGBTQ Pride and Affirming Our Values

Dear UCSF Community,

This month, members of our community will come together to celebrate Pride Month and mark the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising that sparked the modern LGBTQ rights movement.

UCSF unequivocally reaffirms its support for the LGBTQ community. Our unwavering commitment to protect the fundamental rights of the LGBTQ community is especially crucial today in the wake of several federal actions that would roll back basic human rights, including access to health care and homeless shelters. Among them:

  • The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) proposed a regulation on May 24 that removes current anti-discrimination protections for transgender Americans from the Affordable Care Act (ACA), asserting that discrimination on the basis of sex should not include gender identity. The proposal essentially says that gender identity is not protected under federal laws that prohibit discrimination in health care.
  • The HHS released a final rule last month that would allow health workers to refuse to perform or assist in medical procedures if it violates their “conscience” or religion. The rule is being challenged in a lawsuit.
  • The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development last month proposed a rule to allow federally funded homeless shelters to turn away transgender people for religious reasons or force them to use bathrooms and sleeping areas that do not conform to their gender identity.
  • In March, the U.S. Department of Defense outlined a policy that bans enlistment by anyone with a gender dysphoria diagnosis who is taking hormones or has transitioned to another gender. Troops already in the military would have to serve according to the sex stated on their birth certificate.

These and other discriminatory actions against the LGBTQ community are in direct conflict with our UCSF PRIDE Values and run counter to evidence-based care, as well as our programs that serve these communities.

We are proud that:

  • Our Center of Excellence for Transgender Health provides access to comprehensive, effective, and affirming health care for transgender individuals.
  • Our LGBT Resource Center provides a visible presence on campus and enhances a sense of connection and community among LGBTQ faculty, staff, students, trainees, and patients.
  • UCSF Health has been named a “Leader in LGBTQ Healthcare Equality” over the past decade by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, the largest LGBTQ civil rights organization in the nation.

The fight for greater equity and inclusion for the LGBTQ community continues. Together, we must support one another, continue to advance our mission of health care, research, and education that benefits all individuals, and cultivate a workplace where everyone can thrive.
