Dear Colleagues:

I am very pleased to announce that the search for the new position of the Vice Chancellor of Diversity and Outreach is now underway.

Earlier this year, the Chancellor’s Advisory Committee for Academic Diversity (CACAD) formed a Subcommittee on Outreach and Diversity, which was charged with developing a single, consolidated proposal for the coordination of diversity initiatives at UCSF. The subcommittee; appointed by Bobby Baron, MD, then-chair of the CACAD; was co-chaired by Joseph Castro, PhD, vice provost for Student Academic Affairs and special assistant to the chancellor; and Renee Navarro, MD, PharmD, director of Academic Diversity. 

The subcommittee recommended the appointment of a highly visible, senior level leader to oversee and align all diversity efforts on campus. The proposal was endorsed by the CACAD, the Chancellor and the Executive Cabinet and led to the creation of the position of Vice Chancellor of Diversity and Outreach.

The Vice Chancellor of Diversity and Outreach will be responsible for developing and implementing a strategic plan that enhances UCSF’s efforts to nurture diversity and aligns with the University’s mission and priorities. This position will report directly to me.

Bobby Baron has agreed to chair the search committee. I would like to thank him as well as the following people who have agreed to serve as members: Sheila Antrum, Farid Chehab, John Featherstone, Elena Fuentes-Afflick, Lauren Goins, Mary Anne Koda-Kimble, Judith Martin-Holland, Nancy Milliken, Uchenna Okoye, Eliseo Perez-Stable, Neil Powe and Shane Snowdon.

I have been impressed with the passion and commitment demonstrated in this area by many of our faculty, staff and students. Creating a diverse and inclusive environment in which everyone has the opportunity to excel is critical to achieving our mission. The breadth of diversity initiatives here on campus is a testament to the importance that the UCSF community places on creating such an environment. 

This position initially will be a minimum 50 percent appointment, and the search is limited to UCSF faculty and staff. I encourage any member of the faculty or staff who is passionate about diversity and inclusion at UCSF to apply.
