About Mission Bay Campus Planning

About Mission Bay Campus Planning

The Long Range Development Plan for UCSF was completed in 1996 and Mission Bay was subsequently approved by The Regents of the University of California as the site for a second major campus. At Mission Bay, UCSF has embarked upon the single largest capital and program planning project in its history. Implementation of the long range plan calls for the construction of 2.65 million square feet of new space over the next 15 to 20 years at a 43 acre site, about a mile south of San Francisco's financial district in a new and vibrant section of the city. The site is adjacent to land that has been designated for housing, retail establishments, open space, and anticipated biotechnology industry. Additional acreage has been designated for construction of an elementary school and police and fire stations; the site will be well served by public transportation.

Upon completion, the new campus will be about three-quarters the size of the main campus site at Parnassus Heights. The prospect of developing 43 acres of land in the city of San Francisco to house new and existing programs is an exciting, if daunting, task which will require enormous resources and involve numerous individuals and groups in the planning process. Planning and development will be accomplished in phases; construction of the first building at Mission Bay begins in the fall of 1999, with completion early in 2002.

Many different committees have been established to address specific areas or issues of concern. The membership of each committee is provided, as is the email address of each committee chairperson, to enable input into the planning process from the entire campus community.
