Dear Colleagues:

I am writing to share important changes to UC Policy regarding sexual violence and sexual harassment and to offer a reminder about the resources available to faculty, staff, students, and trainees. There are many policy changes underway, but a few recent updates deserve specific mention.

Last week I had the pleasure of attending a holiday concert at SF Jazz. The group sang powerfully of the need for peace on earth. For me their joyful, rocking performance was a stark counterpoint to the brutal inhumanity taking place throughout the year in wars that have resulted in mass migrations in the Middle East and North Africa as well as the continuing social injustice, violence, and growing bigotry and intolerance here at home.

Making UCSF a great place to work is the purpose of UCSF’s Staff Engagement Survey. Conducted by Gallup in May of this year, the survey is a means to gather your feedback toward advancing this goal.

Dear Members of the UCSF Community,

I am writing to share the outcome of the 2015 Staff Engagement Survey. UCSF’s overall score rose modestly from 3.81 to 3.86 points on a five-point scale, and over the four annual surveys completed since 2011, we have had an increase of .26. While this constitutes a meaningful increase and could indicate a higher sense of engagement, I encourage all of us to use this information as the impetus for further significant progress.

I wanted to share some exciting news with you regarding Elizabeth Blackburn, PhD, professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics. After 25 years at UCSF, Liz will be leaving to become president of the Salk Institute for Biological Sciences, effective January 1, 2016.

We are saddened by the stabbing incident that occurred on the UC Merced campus yesterday morning. Our thoughts go out to the victims and their families, as well as the entire UC Merced community. Fortunately, all four victims are expected to recover.

These tragic events serve to remind us about the important role we all have in protecting the safety and security of our community.

Dear UCSF Community,

Today UCSF finalized agreements with San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee and the Golden State Warriors that would protect patient safety at the UCSF Medical Center at Mission Bay should the Warriors proposed sports and entertainment complex be approved and built on a site adjacent to our hospitals. As a result, the city and the Warriors are committed to actively mitigating traffic levels through a series of measures that support timely access to our hospitals by patients, visitors, and healthcare workers.
